pregnancy diary 2

Two days ago I had my second prenatal check, Dr. KB did it again with me. Result of the blood check of last visit is good, nothing to worry about.

Baby:

baby at 12th week

baby at 12th week

It is now 5cm long from crown to rump. The doctor said it’s bigger than average 11th week fetus, so we may have mis-calculated the exact time of my getting pregnant. She shifted my due time one week forward. Now it’s Nov. 15th.

From the monitor of the ultrasound machine, we saw that the baby now has a very beautiful, human like profile, just the head is particularly big. Its spine can be clearly seen, I could even count the sections in the spine. Arms and legs could be vaguely seen. The doctor tried to show me its face, frontal. Oh the face looked like alien seen from the front! It’s upsetting if it is the baby’s final look. Doctor said it’s normal, all fetus look like that in face at 12th week, the face will get prettier later. But the profile of the head looked already very pretty, how I wished to touch my baby!

Mama:
My pollen allergy has gone. I’m not as tired as weeks before, the evening nausea is not so bad as weeks before. All in all, I’m feeling better, but still need a lot of sleep. My colleagues and manager have been nice to me. Since weeks before, I’ve been arriving at office during 10:00am – 11:am (Just couldn’t get up earlier). But nobody complained. There is advantage working as programmer after all. Normally we don’t have tight direct meetings with clients, so we don’t have to show up in office or some meeting places at 9:00am or earlier everyday. Maybe just because of that extra sleep, my baby has grown bigger than expected.

My figure hasn’t changed much and my belly is not showing yet. I’m still craving for the food I always ate as little child. My mother sent me a package containing a lot of dried sea food, produced at my hometown. The package was sent to the local custom house and it took me some time and verbal effort to get it. The clerks in the local custom house have never seen most of the stuff in the package in their whole life, it was not easy to convince them that they are actually eatable and I cannot live without these funny things for the moment. For this I’m a bit jealousy to the Chinese people living in places like Canada. I heard that there one can basically find anything that is available in China, including some river-living crabs. And the fishes are even fresh and crabs living, so one can even apply steaming with them there. In Germany it’s difficult. Consuming a lot of Tofu, Shanghai cabbage and watermelon as always.

I read news from internet or read books when I’m not sleeping at home. Basically some books on art and history, written by E. H. Gombrich and Ray Huang. They are really wonderfully written. I wish our baby can learn English as soon as possible so he or she can read these books in their original language as early as possible, as thus understand the world better. Just ordered Jim Roger’s new book “A Gift to My Children: A Father’s Lessons for Life and Investing”. My child has to understand the importance of money and take his/her own responsibility of gaining a lot. I don’t want him/her to have a mentality of “The government should take care of eveything of me.”; “The society is responsible for finding a job for me. When I’m out of job or simply don’t want to work, I should get the money from the government.” – Which is a common mentality in Germany. I consider it a disaster if my child view things that way.

I forgot to ask the doctor whether I’m having a boy or a girl during the second prenatal check. I can’t tell why but I feel I’m having a boy. And a boy that is as quiet as Dirk. Well, no matter a boy or a girl, I love my child with all my heart. I hope he or she would love reading, and we are surely going to show him the wonderful world.

Papa:
Dirk is taking very good care of me at home. Our baby and I are lucky. He keeps reading books for new parents and cannot wait to play Lego with the child. He also started to record good documentation program from TV senders. He’s more interested in topics like “How a certain kind of machine works”, “The history of our universe”, etc. I fell asleep for several times when he was watching and recording a physics professor’s program for our child. I sincerely wish that our child did not fall asleep during the program when I did.
